Sporting a distinctive large aperture and deep light bucket, the FirstLight 254mm f/5 Dobsonian Telescope by Explore Scientificgives users a simple yet highly effective platform. The fast f/5 focal ratio, hexagonal rack-and-pinion focuser, and the ability to detach the OTA from the rockerbox and mount it on an equatorial mount make the FirstLight a good choice for imaging. A Vixen-style dovetail plate is included for use with an EQ mount. The 2.5" focuser allows the use of both 1.25" and larger 2" eyepieces and accessories.

The heavy base provides a rock-steady platform with very low vibrations, and can be disassembled into flat sections within minutes for easy transport. Dual mounting rings allow the OTA to be precisely balanced for smooth movement. The telescope comes with a red dot finder, a red-beam flashlight with lanyard, a Tirion Double-Sided Multi-Latitude Planisphere, and a double-sided moon crater map.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I change the focuser's position to opposite side of a tube?

A: No, you cannot.

Q: 2. The image from the telescope is upside down and backwards. How do I fix this?

A: You would just need to add a 90 Degree Star Diagonal. The Celestron 90° Star Diagonal (1.25") will work. Link: https://bhpho.to/3t4ZEMK

Q: 3. Tube dimension ??

A: The Explore Scientific FirstLight 130mm f/4.6 Alt-Az Newtonian Telescope BH #EXFLN130NT • MFR #FL-N130600MAZ01 (OTA) is about 24" X 6"

Q: 4. The description says the included 25mm eyepiece gives 40x power but spec's give the focal length as 500mm that would yield 20 power; what is correct?

A: You are correct it would be about a 20x. I have notified my web content team of the error.

Q: 5. How much does the OTA weigh?

A: The OTA from the Explore Scientific FirstLight 114mm f/4.3 Reflector EQ Telescope weighs roughly 6 lb.

Q: 6. When assembled, what is the height of the eyepiece from the ground?

A: It's surprisingly low for such a large-aperture scope. Pointed straight up at zenith, the eyepiece is at eye-height for me, 67 inches. At horizon, the eyepiece only about 20 inches off the ground.

Q: 7. how can I use my nikon DSLR camera with this telescope?

A: There are different ways to attach your Nikon camera to the Explore Scientific FirstLight 102mm f/9.8 Alt-Az Refractor Telescope BH #EXFLAR102RT1 • MFR #FL-AR1021000MAZ01 the most secure way would be to attach the Tele Vue SLR Prime Focus Camera Adapter for 2" Focusers BH #TE2CA • MFR #ACM-2000 to the rear of the scope. Attach a T-mount ring to your camera body and those (2) pieces will screw together. The T-mount or ring is specific to the make and model of your camera.

Q: 8. I see the telescope comes with a 1.25" reducer adapter to accommodate 1.25" eyepieces. What is the diameter of the focuser?

A: The reducer that is part of the diagonal in this FirstLight 114mm F/4.3 Reflector Telescope is 1.25" diameter .

Q: 9. What's the weight of the tube? Thanks

A: The weight of the tube is an estimated 18 pounds

[Rack-and-Pinion] Well made and solid for my Telescope. Fairly Portable. Smooth operation.

[Rack-and-Pinion] I wanted a manual equatorial mount for my Williams Optics 81mm scope. Because of the low price I had some doubts but it turned out to be a good choice. My scope plus camera is around 12 pounds and this mount handles it without a problem.

[Rack-and-Pinion] This style of scope gives the largest aperture I could handle by myself without spending a lot of money. I had none of the problems people reported with the earlier version. Everything works well without any modifications needed. Set up is easy enough, but there are a number of loose parts to keep track of. I think it will work well for the kind of use I will give it- I camp out on a hilltop and leave my scope set up all night. This is not a scope that you would take outside for a brief viewing. The set up is too cumbersome for that.

The mass-produced, tube Dobs can be a little bit cheaper and require little set-up, but you would need to step down in size if you transport it and use it by yourself. The premium Dobs set up quickly and are light enough to let you get a bigger scope, but the cost is higher than I was willing to pay. This Explore Scientific is a big scope at a realistic price.

[1270 mm] Product name is misleading. Should be Shroud *for* Explore Scientific Dobsonian. A more detailed description (overview section) is easy to miss on the mobile app.
Probably an excellent product for the intended use.

[f/5] This is a big light great telescope, arrived intact with very nice packaging, didn't had any issues with movement but counterweights is essential, collimation was very easy using laser colimator, focuser is smooth and able to hold my heavy explore scientific 30mm, replace the red dot finder with terlad , every thing worked just fine , only problem was small aluminium shaving pieces were everywhere, need to clean it good before first use.

[1.25", 2"] I live in Australia and received the Explore Scientific FirstLight 152mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope in good condition. The telescope is absolutely amazing and you can see sharp sky view, especially the planets. The B&H staff also was helpful and amazing throughout the purchase process up to the shipping. I would love to give the telescope and B&H 10 stars, unfortunately there are only 5 to pick from. Thank you
